Dissection of Me

TW: This series may contain images that could be emotionally challenging and disturbing to viewers. Viewer discretion is advised

Dissection of Me is a series of 6 poetic illustrations based on poems I wrote. The basis of this project is to show mental illness through my perspective and experiences. It acts as a counter to what media (specifically television) usually portrays mental illness. Often disorders and mental health is warped to fit narratives that demonize, romanticize, and dramatize individuals like me. I’ve been told I’m too composed and calm to have mental illness, since I don’t appear “insane”. This invalidation of my illness made me question myself and who I am. The lack of proper representation of mental illness lets harmful stereotypes remain in our society. My hope is the audience will reconsider any thoughts they have about mental illness and question those who seek to keep these prejudices in place. This series is more than an affirmation to myself, but a testament to conviction, acceptance, and healing. To those with mental illness, I hope you find a piece of yourself in my works. May this be a voice in the storm.
